For decades, technology has been an integral part of our home life, accompanied by bulky modems, tangled wires, an abundance of remotes, and the glow of standby lights during the night. However, a transformative shift is on the horizon, introducing us to the first ground-breaking trend of 2024: Invisible technology. This trend recognises the essential role technology plays in our daily routines and revolutionises the way we coexist with it.

We’re seeing tech being fitted in family homes during the building phase, which allows for seamless integration that increases ease of usability while keeping spaces free from the messy “backend”. For example, we’re seeing TVs camouflaged by décor, discrete storage for modems and audio systems, and built-in electronic installations. On top of that, we’re seeing new tech also entering the home, like more motion sensors, smart thermostats, voice-controlled lighting systems, and smart mirrors.

2. Choosing sustainable options

While sustainable options were far and few even just five or ten years ago, we’re seeing a huge increase in the recent years, and more and more clients choosing to invest in long-term sustainability. One of the biggest sustainable options we foresee clients choosing in 2024 is going all-electric. This includes opting for induction over gas cooktops in the kitchen and electric water heating systems. Paired with a strong solar infrastructure, this choice is set to keep households saving on bills in the long run.

But it doesn’t just end there. We’re seeing more clients considering sustainability during the building phase, including opting for sustainable materials such as reclaimed timber and recycled steel, utilising energy-efficient insulation, and leveraging circular design to minimise waste long after their home is built.

3. Quality craftsmanship

Similarly, we’ve also been seeing clients favouring craftsmanship, choosing quality materials, and artisan results over cookie-cutter alternatives. This shift reflects a growing appreciation for the timelessness (both in a functional and aesthetic sense) that comes with handcrafted homes.

We’re particularly seeing a rise in authentic stone being used for bathroom, laundry, and kitchen countertops, which is no surprise. Later this year, Australia will be the first country to ban engineered stone due to its negative health impacts on workers who manufacture them. While the ban isn’t quite yet in place, we’re already seeing clients consider more sustainable, higher-quality options when it comes to stone and other building materials.

4. Quiet luxury

Lastly, the biggest trend we’re expecting to see is quiet luxury, also referred to as refined simplicity.  We’re seeing simple, intentional spaces that feel warm and lived in, yet elegant. For this trend, it’s all in the details and the functionality of spaces. Bathrooms are elevated into wet areas that exude wellness retreats, with pared-back interior design and striking bathroom amenities like plunge pools, infrared saunas, and statement showers.
